Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia can significantly impact self-confidence, but it is highly treatable. With personalized consultation, careful preparation, a precise surgical procedure, and consistent aftercare, a harmonious, masculine chest contour can be achieved. Surgical methods such as liposuction, gland removal, or combination techniques ensure a lasting aesthetic result.

Gynecomastia refers to the enlargement of the male breast due to increased glandular or fatty tissue. One or both breasts can be affected. This condition is widespread and can occur during puberty or develop later in life. Many men suffer from this aesthetic condition, as gynecomastia can significantly impact self-confidence.
The causes of gynecomastia can be varied:

  • Hormonal changes: An imbalance between estrogen and testosterone can lead to breast growth.

  • Medications: Some medications, such as certain heart or antiandrogen drugs, can promote gynecomastia.

  • Obesity: Excess weight can lead to pseudogynecomastia due to increased fatty tissue.

  • Genetic factors: In rare cases, a hereditary predisposition may be present.

  • Diseases: Liver or kidney diseases, as well as tumors of the testicles or adrenal glands, can cause hormonally induced gynecomastia.

Not all cases of gynecomastia require treatment. However, if there is significant breast growth that is physically or psychologically distressing, surgical correction may be advisable. Treatment should also be considered in cases where pain or discomfort is present.

Consultation

The first step involves a detailed consultation with an experienced specialist in aesthetic surgery. During this consultation, the breast shape, skin quality, tissue volume, and possible causes are analyzed. The various treatment options are discussed, including:

  • Liposuction for predominantly fatty tissue

  • Removal of glandular tissue in cases of true breast growth

  • Combining both methods for optimal results

The specialist creates an individual treatment plan, explains the risks and clarifies the expected results.

Preparation and procedure

Before the procedure, medical examinations such as blood tests, ultrasound, or ECG are performed. The patient receives instructions on abstaining from nicotine and alcohol, adjusting medications, and dietary needs. Careful preparation reduces the risk of complications and promotes a smooth recovery.

Gynecomastia surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. The exact procedure depends on the findings:

  • Liposuction: Excess fatty tissue is suctioned out through small incisions in the skin.

  • Gland removal: The enlarged glandular tissue is surgically removed, often via an incision around the areola, which heals inconspicuously.

  • Combination procedure: In many cases, both fat is suctioned out and glandular tissue is removed to achieve a harmonious, male chest contour.

The operation usually takes one to two hours.

After the operation

After the procedure, a compression shirt or support bra should be worn for several weeks to aid healing and reduce swelling. Pain, bruising, or a feeling of tightness are normal and can be treated with medication. Follow-up appointments with the specialist ensure proper healing and a good aesthetic result. Physical exertion should be limited during the first few weeks.
